China: an introduction

Posted on 2007.08.04 at 15:02
Clearly I have not written in this for a while. But I think that my fond memories of the "2007 Silk-Road Tour Of American College Students Arts Delegation Cheering For The Western Part Of China & The Cultural Exchange Activities With International Classic Music Public Show Both In Chinese And Foreign Language In Six Big Cities In The Western Part Of China" deserve a special place in cyberspace. By the way, that was literally the name of our tour; it was plastered on posters and programs throughout western China. I suppose the Chinese are not known for being concise. Anyway, these next few entries will be dedicated to recounting the highlights (and lowlights) of the trip. And seeing as how I don't have to leave for work for another hour, I might as well start now.

I woke up at 4:45 on July 5th, and my dad drove me to LaGuardia Airport in NYC where I met Jennifer. Flew about 2 hours to Chicago, then about 13 to Beijing. On the long flight I sat away from everyone, squished between 2 random men. I sleep about 10 minutes total. Read some Half Blood Prince to brush up before book 7 comes out. It's really hot & crowded in Beijing. On our bus ride to the hotel we recieve our introduction to Chinese driving. In the mighty words of Xun, "in China, there are no rules." Red lights? Pedestrians? What are those? Anyway, our Super 8 Hotel looks pretty crusty on the outside, but the inside is actually pretty nice. I'm rooming with Shawna...and will be for the rest of the trip. Then we have our first Chinese meal. All the meals are family-style, each table has a big lazy susan and they just put a bunch of dishes on it and you spin it around and take what you want. Everybody loves the Peking Duck...it's ok. Some kids are hitting the beer pretty hard. Back at the hotel, the beds are really low and really hard, but we're exhausted. Still, not a great sleep. Oh, and the handle on my suitcase is broken.
Day 2 in Beijing brought our first 2 factory tours!! The piano factory and the woodwind (ie clarinet) sweat shop both make me want to cry. Why are we here? The clarinet factory is such a shithole. And I almost got left at the piano factory because Jennifer wanted me to practice my piece with Tyler since we had never played it together before (and pretty much everyone else had been playing theirs at Music Naturally for 2 weeks). Doris tells them what's wrong with the bass clarinets, because she's Doris. Some crazy lady buys us all KFC which nobody eats, but we feel bad so we carry it all around the train station. This is where Shawna and I are introduced to the squatty. We go to pee but find no toilets, only a hole in the ground. We decide to wait, thinking that there absolutely had to be real toilets on the train, but we would soon discover the horrible truth. It was also a shock to see the setup of the overnight trains. Each car was divided into compartments of 6 beds each; 2 rows of 3 bunk beds. Then we find out that we would be sharing compartments with random Chinese people. Yay! But one of the ones in ours helped us put our luggage up..he was really cool. Anyway, this train ride was pretty much the worst part of the trip. We got on at 6:30 PM and were told that we'd be arriving in Lanzhou at 9AM. Yeah, well basically 9AM turned into 3PM. It especially sucked because we were completely unprepared for this train ride, meaning no one had taken a shower before it or brought an accesible toothbrush or deodorant or anything and we were all sweaty and gross from lugging our crap all over the disgustingly crowded Beijing station. Mmmm. They cancelled our concert for that night though. All we had to do was go to some banquet with the mayor.

That's enough for now. This is tiring.

You scored as agnosticism. You are an agnostic. Though it is generally taken that agnostics neither believe nor disbelieve in God, it is possible to be a theist or atheist in addition to an agnostic. Agnostics don't believe it is possible to prove the existence of God (nor lack thereof).

Agnosticism is a philosophy that God's existence cannot be proven. Some say it is possible to be agnostic and follow a religion; however, one cannot be a devout believer if he or she does not truly believe.

You scored 85%!
Congratualtions! You have been voted to be the First Counselor of the Senate. Your eloquence with the Latin tongue is well-known, and you have been elevated to a position of authority within the Senate. You are always the first to speak at the Senate meetings (after the Emperor, of course) and are a very powerful ally (or enemy) to have. More than likely, you have the backing of some of the military, which could come in handy should you ever decide that being the Princeps Senatus is not enough for you...

I am currently sitting in ATS because I can't get my internet in the townhouse to work! It's really strange because I can connect to the wireless network, my computer shows full internet service, but still it can't actually connect. I'm gonna have to call comcast again I suppose because this doesn't make any sense. I'm really hungry because I didn't eat breakfast, but I started downloading some music and now I have to wait for it to finish. I also need to suck it up and buy my books from the bookstore I think, because it seems that all the shipping costs from the different sellers on amazon will add up and I won't be saving any money after all. But I did switch into the class I wanted. I'm in the 8:30 section because I never got permission for the other, and I'm kind of ambivalent about that. On one hand, it would be nice to sleep in a bit, especially on Mondays. But then again I think my brain functions better when I get up and out of bed at a relatively early hour. Plus, I had an 8:30 MW English class last semester, so I'm used to it. And now I have a bigger break to go home for lunch on Mondays, between 11 and 1:30. Allright this is silly. I'm leaving now.

What is your stand on.....
Abortion?:NOTHING to do with the government!! pro-choice all the way.
Death Penalty?:in VERY extreme cases i could be persuaded. generally i'm against it, but it all depends on the individual circumstances.
Prostitution?:gross and degrading. makes me sad. just don't do it.
Alcohol?:do whatever the hell you want just dont rape or injure anyone in the process. personally, i don't see the appeal of getting drunk.
Marijuana?:kids are gonna do it anyway, and if it's illegal that just makes it all the more tempting.
Other drugs?:what, like cocaine? there's definately a good reason shit like that is illegal.
Gay marriage?:absolutely PRO. yet again, nothing to do with the government for starters. the whole debate makes me so mad. rediculous.
Illegal immigrants?:this debate also sickens me. immigrants are people too. suck it up.
Smoking?:it's gross. but hey, it's your body.
Drunk driving?:very very bad and STUPID. i hate stupid people.
Cloning?:creepy. i don't see the point unless you're cloning organs to donate.
Racism?:is this really still an issue? of course it is! i hate that it is.
Premarital sex?:sure why not? just use a condom, buddy.
Religion?:if you want to be religious that's fine. just don't go imposing that onto other people, or onto national LAWS. can we say "separation of church and state"?
The war in Iraq?:oh dear. bad, bad idea. i'm not too keen on war in general to say the least, but this just takes it one step further.
Bush?:is it 2008 yet??? what an ass.
Downloading music?:do it all the time. like right now.
The legal drinking age?:well obviously college kids are drinking it up...i wouldn't be offended if they made it 18 like the rest of the world.
Porn?:a little porn never hurt anyone...that i know of.
Suicide?:well i dont think it's a "sin" or anything like that, but that's probably because i'm an atheist. well, it makes me sad and i'd say it's often preventable. good ol' ECT!

I'm getting bored with this whole summer thing. The summer's only half over and I'm already getting antsy to go back to school. Hopefully Lisa I can go to your house for a little bit so I can get outta here for a while!! But besides that...

I actually went swimming today! Usually it's too cold for me so I just go half way in (shut up), but not today! I'm also feeling like I'm never going to finish Great Expectations for the second time around. I will do it!!

Our PC crashed today because Kimyin is retarded and used up way too much memory even though it's been warning her for months. No biggie, we went to get a new one this afternoon because I swear my mother cannot live one day without a computer.

Okay, random. I was just listening to songs from the 2004 Phantom of the Opera movie. Holy crap. "Music of the Night" made me cry, and not in a good way. That guy cannot sing at all...I'm really quite offended that they actually put out a movie with the phantom sounding like such absolute crap. Even worse is that they changed most of the words to that song and..I'm sorry...you just don't do that!! Or at least the words are completely different from the version I have on the broadway soundtrack with Michael Crawford singing it, which is wonderful. Sorry. I just love that musical and that's probably my favourite song from it and I really think they completely ruined it. Nothing further.

So I had the day off today for the holiday and it's back to work tomorrow. Hopefully Dr. O'Donnell can keep the bitchiness and annoying/disturbing drunken pickup stories down to a minimum.

Oh yeah! This was pretty pathetic. Titanic was on last night (I must admit-I love it) and I was kinda drifting in and out of consciousness towards the end. Still, I've seen that movie like 20 times. But even last night I saw the part where she lets Jack sink down after he dies. Whatever. So, then i fall asleep again and wake up when old lady Rose is like "so now you know that there was a Jack Dawson...but he now exists only in my memory..." Then, I proceed to say, out loud to the television screen, "how do you know he isn't still alive?" I then, of course, immediately realize what an insufferable retard I am. Good job, smarty.

Ok, I have to call Mizzie up here so I can lock her up and the kitties can come out. My poor babies!! She's so cruel to them. Such a pity. G'night.

We got wireless today in the house! Yay! So now I will probably be wasting massive quantities of time on this little computer of mine, but i certainly hope not. The summer's going ok. I'm only working 2 full days a week, plus Wednesday and Saturday mornings, Mon/Fri afternoons, and alternate weekends. I kinda liked that whole just working mornings thing i had goin' on for a while there but oh well. otherwise...well...on kimyin's b-day we went to NYC with a few fairly strange kids to see AFI. She made us get there and line up at like 4 even though doors didnt open till 7,and they didnt go on till almost 10, so we could get right up to the front. i was not looking forward to that..since it was quite hot and she said herself one of the guys that came with us is somewhat creepy, but it was actually not too bad. and we did get right up front! kimyin was in the very first row the entire time..despite all the pushing..and i was generally right behind her. of course, we had to listen to this horrible band called the dillinger escape plan before they came on. horrible. it was all nonstop screaming, crazy senseless guitars and drums, and constant siezure-inducing lighting effects. yikes. but afi was pretty sweet even though davey cannot consistantly sing in pitch to save his life. that, and jade can't play that one line...EVER. sorry. and it was smith's b-day too so we sang to him and they brought out a cake and all. good times. explicitly good! oh silly davey and his glow in the dark orange eye makeup! well and now it's today. after work i went to a flea market, which was riveting. and in barnes & noble i found this awesome book called "dancing with cats." it was a book of pictures of people dancing...with cats. literally. yeah, i know. it was quite amusing, but then again nauseating and creepy at the same time. and now limewire is being a buttcrack. damn. now i shall play a game. or do a survey, either one. here we go...

Well I've been home for a few weeks now. I'm working mornings at the vet which is nice...I get the whole afternoon to do whatever. I even started out practicing my flute every day, which is strange because I hardly ever practice at school and usually play even less at home. I guess it's because the piece I'm playing is really quite fun...the Carmen Fantasie. Yeah, it's cool. And work is good. I fainted the other day! Dr. Agresta was pulling a tumor out of this cat's ear with some foreceps and the blood was just gushing out and there were big clumps of stuff too and...eew. I was ok for a while but eventually i blacked out and plopped right down, and apparently he caught my head right before it hit the metal table. Fun times. And when I took Mizzie in for her shots she was horrible. She wiggled so much and was so scared that she peed all over and had diarrhea...so I had to shave her butt. It was very gross. What a wuss. Besides that, I'm devoting this summer to doing some serious reading. I've read 4 books so far and am on my 5th. Yay! So now I need to go to work before it rains again. It's been almost nonstop rain for like 2 weeks now. And I'm making Kimyin come too so she can play with Claudia. That's all.

Well, today was kinda nice. All my papers are done and I only had to study for my "robots" and english finals tomorrow. It was actually quite relaxing...I tied Mizzie up in the back yard and sat at the picnic table and studied for a few hours. I also ran some errands...which meant giving all my toys back to Professor Casler, and that was sad. I did keep the unicorn pen though. Hehe. I also picked up my latest english paper and I got an A again! I love Professor O'Hara!! She's loved my last 3 papers... and the only corrections she's made have been a few subject-verb agreement things in the second one (because apparently i am retarded). I really want to take her Victorian nightmares seminar and i hope it's offered next spring, or I will be very sad. Anyway, I was planning on going home Friday morning, but I got an email from this girl Hana, who I vaguely remember from the PA Academy, asking me if I would play in their concert Friday night because they need a flutist. So, I think I'll do it because I never turn down stuff like this and, hey, I'll get paid! Hopefully It'll be more than $5. Well, I'm sick of studying for robots, so I think I'll read some poems or something. Damn unpredictable ID's.
